Belconnen Town Centre has been trialling 40 km/h zones for over two years. The rollout to other town centre is causing confusion as commuters notice the changes.

After less than a week, the speed cameras on Barry Drive had everybody talking.
As part of the staged implementation of the new speed limits, the existing road safety cameras on Northbourne Avenue and Barry Drive were adjusted on Monday 21 June to capture traffic in the 40 km/h zone.
In the 48 hours since the cameras were adjusted to capture traffic, around 5,000 motorists were identified as travelling above the speed limit.

40 km/h zones in town centres
40 km/h zones are becoming more common in the ACT.
The ACT Government has introduced 40 kilometre per hour speed limits in areas of high pedestrian and cyclist activity to improve safety for all road users.
These speed limits are in effect at the town centres in Belconnen, City/Braddon, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong and Woden. They are also in effect at a number of group centres including Amaroo, Calwell, Casey, Charnwood, Chisholm, Conder, Curtin, Dickson, Erindale, Hawker, Jamison, Kaleen, Kambah, Kingston, Kingston Foreshore, Kippax, Manuka, Mawson, Wanniassa and Weston.
