A place for people: more street and less road
There is a difference between the road and the street. A road is designed for cars. The street is a complex environment designed for people and may include a road. The street includes many other features including verge, median strip, footpaths, bike paths, seats, outdoor dining, gardens, and more. Streets can include longitudinal parks and playgrounds. Most people will not cycle on road. New Space For Living – Quality Of Public Space looks at the urban forms found in The Netherlands and considers what could be done with this public space.
The Street: Reducing the car parks, bicycle parks and displays in public space means more space for greenery, sporting facilities, play, and meeting places, thereby contributing to the better public health.

Groningen’s street network and public space cannot be summarised or captured in a single typology or typical street profile. No two streets are the same, the width between the facades varies, the programme is different, and uses change throughout the day. A selection of 14 street typologies has been developed for the purpose of the Guideline. This rich palette of streets is designed to position every street in Groningen within the urban fabric.
