North Weston Concept Plan is found in the Territory Plan. Cycling is not mentioned all that often in the Territory Plan. In the North Weston Concept Plan, cycling is not mentioned at all.
The luxury of a footpath
For a long time, suburbs were built for cars – footpaths were seen as optional. Canberra’s older suburbs often lack paths. The newer suburbs are better and the paths make them pedestrian friendly.
Missing link: filling the cycle infrastructure gaps
A bike network is more than the sum of its parts. Small gaps can greatly decrease the popularity of the route. Missing links is a term that describes gaps in the cycling network, and those gaps can be quite short.
Good and direct bike paths save time
Cycle infrastructure is lagging in Coombs. Despite the Concept Plan being finalised in 2012 and the suburb established since 2015, the cycle infrastructure is still not complete or sufficient. As the crow flies, Coombs and Belconnen are about the same distance from Civic centre, however, while commuting from Civic to Belconnen in 30 minutes is possible, it is not from Coombs.
